We DID Elect A Democrat...Didn't We???

Well, Kids, I am sitting here just fuming over soooooo much that I am seeing my President do that I could just slap somebody!!! Okay, now correct me if I'm wrong, but we elected a President who stated that he would abolish "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"? He promised he would end the War in Iraq. He told us he would make sure that he'd close Guantanamo and end the holding of so-called "enemy combatants" indefinitely without charges or evidence? How about the idea that the candidate we elected would push for transparency and restore the constitution as it was written, and throw in The Bill of Rights while he was at it so we could follow the rule of law once more?Yes? I'm not imagining things, am I???

So, could SOMEbody explain to me how it is that we're firing some of our best and brightest military minds, great leaders who are willing to give their lives for their country and have brought nothing but honor to this land for such horribly homophobic reasons? And could SOMEbody tell me why we're still in Iraq, with no end in sight, and pouring money into a new front in Afghanistan? And, please, will SOMEbody explain to me how "prolonged detention" is any diffferent than what Bush/Cheney have been doing all along? Is he friggin' kidding me??? My God.

I don't know about you, but I voted for Barak Obama for President because he was going to allow my gay and lesbian friends to serve in the military, as they had their entire careers, with honor and dignity, in line with the military's own code of honor. I cast my ballot for Barak because he said he'd end the loss of American lives in preemptive wars that serve no purpose.
I was a supporter of Obama for President because he proposed the awesome concept of allowing people due process, demanding that inidividuals be charged with a crime and given a speedy trial before they are imprisoned, and not indefinitely. I sent my hard-earned contributions to Senator Obama's campaign because I truly believed that he would reinstate the rule of law, and abandon the "ad-hoc," on-the-fly, make-it-up-as-we-go-along "it's legal cause the President says it is" Nixon-esque governing we have been oppressed by for eight long years.

What is it that happens between the promise and the presidential podium, between the candidate and becoming POTUS? I'm not a Pollyanna; I am not naive and young and gullible. I am a student of politics and civics and costitutionality. I understand more about the workings of politics than your average citizen, and am a bit of a wonk. Okay, I'm a BIG civics geek and colossal wonk. My point is, folks, that I am seeing the President bend to the will of the right, avoiding controversy like the plague. I am not seeing the leader who inspird us to hope things could be made right. And I guess I just thought he had more balls than that. I thought this was a guy who was ready to start kickin' ass and takin' names. I am feeling sorely disappointed.

Mr. President, pick up the pen and pass an Executive Order to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" while the scattered-as-always-once-in-office Democratic Congress get their shit together. I ask you now: stop following in the foosteps of your predecessors in regards to the wars and the loss of American lives, for we have lost so many more than died in 9/11 by now. Say, "Enough!" to relabeling the way we imprison people indefinitely and devising new ways to try our prisoners of war. I voted for you, Sir, to restore these United States to the rule of law and make things right. Why? Because it's the right thing to do and things have gone so terribly wrong. Do not let hope fade again, as we will not get a second chance should you fail. President Obama, keep your word.

Hi Annette,
My blog isn't putting in the moderated comments - working on it! Meanwhile, here's your comment:

Annette has left a new comment on your post "We DID Elect A Democrat...Didn't We???":

Okay, I am going to try to talk you down a little.. First of all, DADT, he wants Congress to send him legislation, he has asked for it several times. He has stated over and over he will sign it as soon as he gets it. He does NOT want to do this by Executive Order because it is too easy to counteract if it is done that way. However if it is done by LAW then it would be seen as the will of the people, instead of just his will.

Now, he is still bringing the troops home from Iraq, not sure why you are upset there... that's not changed, neither has GitMo. Those are still all on track.. just dealing with Congress is a pain in the ass.. these Dumbocrats running scared of the Rethuglicans are driving me nuts. They are hiding in the shadows because of the "detainees getting loose in the USA" instead of our prisons being able to contain them. Not sure what part of Supermax they don't understand... but they are such scaredy cats. You would think it was 6 years ago and Bush was running things telling them they had to do it his way or we were all going to die. Geeze.

No, there is a HUGE difference between what Pres. Obama is talking about and what BushCo did.. The very few people he is talking about that we may have to hold that way are going to be held as POW's. But they will be held at probably a military base, and it will be reviewed every 6 months or so by the courts and by congress, and if possible they will be returned to their country of origin.

Just calm down...lol Have some trust again... We elected the right guy... I know it is hard to believe after the last 8 years, but we really have to learn to trust our President again.

I have a blog I go to who has posted about the detention you might want to read.. it is ZenYenta.. come check it out. Her source is an attorney and she has some information that is worth reading.

Hey, MG,
Here's your comment. As mentioned above, am experiencing technical difficulties...

Monkey Girl has left a new comment on your post "We DID Elect A Democrat...Didn't We???":

I know things work slow in the government, but come on already.

He's been doing a couple of things that have made my eyebrows go up. I hope there's a good explanation coming soon!

Hi Anette,
Love the Dumbocrats and Rethuglicans - brilliant!

You could probably tell by the misspelling and the bad spacing that I was on a rant, and the fact that the pressure's on in the last month of school probably isn't helping matters much...a talking down was definitely due, and I appreciate your efforts!

I will check out ZenYenta. All your points are well-taken. Now, Congress is really setting me off. Did you hear Harry Reid's soundbyte that the GOP is already running with? We are not helping ourselves with this using domestic prisons business. I for one have no problem with domestic imprisonment - could creat jobs, even...the fear tactics are getting ridiculous, and it does feel Bushlike again...
Okay, Miss A, I will have a little faith for awhile longer. Just 'cause you asked so nicely. And backed up your arguments so well. Take care, Girlfriend, and thanks for being the voice of reason!;)

Hi MG,
After being talked down by Annette, I will revert back to your "eyebrows going up" level of concern for awhile. But, Man, there's gotta be a way to get things moving along, y'know? Thanks for the affirmation, Girlie! Have a great weekend!

Nothing that anyone has said, anywhere, has talked me down! The more I read, the worse it gets. It took me days to post something on She Started It! because I was too depressed about it all. Argh! So, if someone says something that really talks you down a few notches more, let me in on it, ok?

I have to say that I agree with Annette here. There have been things that Obama has done that I've wondered about...then I see why he did it. He has a great grasp of seeing the whole picture.. and while we see the individual pieces, they makes sense as a whole. I think Obama is a whole lot smarter than politicians we are accustomed to.

I feel like so much damage has been done, that we have to give him some time to undo them, even if he has to take a conservative tone in the meantime.

It will be okay, he really is one of us.

Hi CEP,
I actually went to the ZenYenta blog that Annette suggested, and there is a difference and it's explained well. I am still impatient, and even more so, and I am just hating having to wait to fix the mess Bush made. The Prop 8 judgement today made no sense and really pissed me off. Not helping!
But I guess we have no choice but to wait and see. I am really hoping Jen is right regarding the "big picture" scenario, and just praying we're not just wasting political capital here...hang tight, Girl.

Jen, thanks for speaking out. I hope that you're right, and my gut instinct is that you are. But I would surely love to see some bold action in the days to come while we have the momentum to do so. Thanks for your encouraging words, Girlfriend.
